In the US, 28,000 home fires occur every year due to electrical faults. These fires cause injuries, fatalities, and $700 million worth of property damage year after year.

Electrical faults shouldn’t be ignored because of the amount of damage they can do. In a matter of minutes, electrical circuits can set your house on fire and destroy your valuables.

Homeowners should take proactive measures to prevent thousands of dollars worth of damage and protect their families.

Here are some major signs that point to the immediate need for an electrician:

Flickering Light Bulbs

Flickering light bulbs are most commonly found in older buildings because of their outdated electrical systems. If you notice flickering lights in your home, don’t ignore the issue; call the electrician immediately. This indicates that the electrical system is burdened by several heavy appliances and can’t distribute power adequately.

Appliances like HVAC units, refrigerators, and washers/dryers require high amounts of power. When multiple appliances are put on a single circuit, it causes disruptions.

Broken Fuse

A trickled circuit breaker and a malfunctioning fuse aren’t signs of danger, but if your fuse keeps blowing, then there’s something wrong—and replacing it isn’t the best solution.

Older homes in the US often have faulty circuit breakers that can’t handle the load of modern appliances. As a result, the electrical system gets overwhelmed and causes short circuits and fires.

Prevent short circuits and fires by hiring experienced electricians to examine your home’s circuits.

Burning Smell

If you can hear something sizzling within your walls or notice a charred, burning smell, shut down your appliances, switch off the sockets, and call a professional to look at your electrical system.

The burning smell indicates that your system is overheating and maybe a fire hazard. Your electrical outlets are most likely short-circuiting and need to be switched off immediately.

Hot Outlets

A good electric circuit never gets warm or hot regardless of how many outlets it’s supporting. If you notice warm electric sockets with charring, your circuit is overloaded and will need to be checked.

Continuing to use hot sockets can cause electric shocks when plugging in a device or switching it on.

Do not ignore warm and charring electrical outlets. These kinds of issues don’t require a new electrical system, but some cables may need to be changed.

By 2040, EVs are expected to represent more than 30% of vehicles on the road. According to forecasts, 47% of two-wheeled vehicles, 24% of light commercial vehicles, and 67% of municipal buses will be electric.

In 2020, only 33% of municipal buses, 30% of two-wheeled vehicles, and around 2% of light commercial vehicles are electric.

BloombergNEF predicts that there will be 500 million passenger EVs on the road by 2040. Although the number of electric vehicles on the road is expected to increase dramatically in the next twenty years, it’s still a negligible amount compared to the number of internal combustion passenger vehicles.

So what’s causing the disparity between EVs and internal combustion passengers?

Let’s take a look:

Differences in Price

By far the biggest obstacle in EV adoption is the fact that they’re significantly more expensive than regular cars; the average consumer can’t afford an electric vehicle.

Manufacturers are racing to make EVs more affordable for consumers so they can be sold at similar prices to combustion engine automobiles. Industry experts believe that for this to happen, large vehicles will need to be replaced with EVs, so manufacturers of small cars can follow suit.

In the next decade, the Chinese and European markets are expected to see a surge in EV sales; electric vehicles will make up half of the cars on the road in these markets.

The shift in the automobile market is supported by government policies and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

EV Adoption in the US

EV adoption in the US will be slower than in other parts of the world because of the lack of proper charging infrastructure. EV owners need to install EV chargers on their properties.

When it comes to EV adoption, the US is lagging; however, the fact that 60% of US households have more than one car means they have the space to install EV chargers at home.

The adoption of EVs is heavily dependent on government policies; countries that are devoted to protecting the environment and halting climate change are willing to take the steps needed to reverse the damage to our environment.

If you’re thinking of getting an electric car in the US, get an EV charger installed. We provide comprehensive electrical services in the Bay Area, including installing electrical panels, and EV chargers, replacing damaged meters, and more.

In the summer of 2020, there was a 10% hike in electricity bills across the board. As more people are staying home than ever before, electricity bills are expected to go up during the pandemic.

Experts claim that in regions with four distinct seasons, there will be a greater difference in electricity bills between the summer and spring months due to changes in temperatures.

Also, energy per kilowatt-house in these parts of the country is more expensive than in the West or the South. Even slight increases in usage will have a significant impact on electricity bills.

Tenants and homeowners in California saw their bills jump by an average of 13.4% in April 2020 compared to April 2019. The hike in bills was the result of an increase in price per kilowatt-hour. While Californians were paying 20.7 cents per kilowatt-hour for electricity; the rest of the country was paying 13.28 cents per kilowatt-hour on average.

Since electricity bills are on the rise and people across the country are struggling to make ends meet, residents need to find ways to reduce their bills.

Here’s how you can start saving up on your electricity bills:

1. Make Use of Daylight

One of the easiest ways to reduce energy bills is to keep the lights off as long as possible during the day and make use of daylight.

Install glass windows in your home with high-quality tint films that let the sunlight through but block solar heat.

One south-facing window brings in 20-100 times more light than artificial light. Switching off a single 60-watt bulb for just 4 hours a day can save more than $9 every year. If you keep most of your lights off during the day, you’ll save quite a bit of money.

2. Unplug Electronics That Aren’t Being Used

Even when your appliances are switched off, the standby mode still uses up energy. Instead of leaving your appliances on standby, turn them off from the main supply to reduce your annual energy bills by 10%.

3. Turn Off Your AC When You’re Not Home

People living in hot states like California often leave their AC on even when they’re not home to keep the space cool, but ACs use up a lot of energy.

Either turn off your AC or install a smart AC that can be controlled remotely using an app, so it switches on a few minutes before you come home.

4. Upgrade Your Electrical Panels

Another reason homeowners see hikes in their electricity bills is because of outdated and inefficient electrical infrastructure. As your home’s electrical panels get older, they may not be able to manage the load of large appliances like televisions, HVAC units, computers, water heaters, etc.

Upgrading your electrical panel not only helps reduce electrical bills but also keeps your home and appliances safe.

If you think you can benefit from a new electrical panel, get in touch with TD West Electric. We provide comprehensive electrical services in the Bay Area, including installing electrical panels, and EV chargers, replacing damaged meters, and more.

If you’re thinking of making useful upgrades to your home, start by installing smart lights. Replacing your current lights with smart lights doesn’t require much effort or time, but it makes a major difference.

Installing smart lighting is the first step when you’re trying to transform your house into a smart home. You’ll see the difference right away, and it won’t require you to dig deep into your pockets.

Smart plugs, in-wall smart switches, smart fixtures, and smart bulbs all work in the same way—they allow you to set schedules, automate routines, and remotely control them using an app. The idea is to make your life more comfortable while saving energy and money in the long run.

You can set a schedule to switch the lights on before dark, so the space doesn’t look like it’s empty (even when it is). You can do the same to switch off any lights you leave on during the night as the sun comes up.

Here’s why you should install smart lighting in your new home:

Safety

Arguably the best feature of smart lights is the fact that they’re automatic; this way, you don’t have to leave the lights on longer than required, and you can set a schedule for when you want them on.

Smart lights come with a variety of useful features; some even work with your house’s existing fixtures. The Sengled Smart LED PAR38 Bulb is compatible with conventional fixtures, but it also comes with a built-in sensor, allowing it to light up whenever it detects motion. At a time when burglaries are increasing across the country, installing smart lights is one of the easiest ways to keep vandals and burglars away.

Other smart lights with sensors light up bulbs inside the house too when they detect motion to scare away anyone who may be lingering outside.

Homeowners who work late and have to walk home in the dark can invest in bulbs that light up walkways to protect them from danger.

Convenience

Setting a lighting schedule is perfect for those who come to and leave the house around the same time every day; they never have to walk into a dark house again.

In case there is a change in routine, they can adjust their lights remotely using apps.

Ambiance

Lighting can instantly change the ambiance of a room. You can dim smart lights to prevent them from straining your eyes. You can even alter their colors for some fun during the holiday season.

You can turn down the lights in the bedroom and use dramatic lighting to set the mood when you’re watching a movie with your loved ones.

We’re a full-service electrical contractor. We offer reliable electrical services for commercial and residential buildings in the Bay Area, San Francisco.

Whether you’re brushing up on your electrical knowledge or are a complete newbie, you’re going to encounter conduits. But what exactly is a conduit?

The general meaning of ‘conduit’ is a pathway; so when we talk about electrical conduits, we are talking about pathways for wiring underneath buildings and houses, or on the surface of walls. They act as a sheath to protect wiring from external damage. Here are the most commonly used electrical conduits.

Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC & IMC)

One of the toughest conduits consists of thick walls and threaded tubing. Rigid Metal Conduits or RMCs are mainly used in outdoor settings. The strong protection they provide makes them ideal for wiring that’s outdoors.

The thick walls of RMC also protect the wiring from electromagnetic interference that could damage radiosensitive equipment.

A thinner and more widely used form of this conduit is the IMC or Intermediate Metal Conduit. IMC has the same protective properties as RMC but is lighter to work with making it a more popular alternative.

Electrical Metal Tubing (EMT)

EMTs are probably the most widely known conduits. Mostly because electrical metal tubing is used for exposed interior installations. The chances are that you’ve seen an EMT in your garage or basement.

Electrical metal tubing consists of unthreaded and thin-walled tubing. They are usually made of steel, although aluminum is a close second. EMC is widely used in commercial buildings but can be seen in homes as well. It is a popular choice since it is a considerably cheaper option.

EMTs are usually not installed in areas with high levels of moisture. Your electrician will evaluate the best place to fit electrical metal tubing on your property.

Did you know that the state of California has a set of guidelines for the proper and lawful installation of conduits in commercial and residential properties? We advise you to employ a professional electrician who is well-versed in the rules and has a good grasp on the different kinds of conduits available.

The lighting in your room can significantly influence your mood. The ambiance of your home’s lighting sets can invoke a multitude of feelings. Having said that, how about using this information to your advantage and sprucing up your home’s lighting?

Let’s start with the place most people have been spending time in since the lockdown—their home office! Social distancing measures have prompted many companies to switch to working from home. And you can also make your work-from-home experience infinitely more comfortable by following these tips to improve your workspace’s lighting!

Install Task Lighting

No matter what your job is, you will require focus. And the best way to do so is to keep your work desk well-illuminated.

Overhead lamps are a great way to ensure your work is facilitated with the best lighting. A lot of modern task lighting also comes with dimmers, so you can adjust the light to your liking.

So, whether you need softer lighting or a harsh bright light to finish your work, you can get either with a simple click of a button!

Utilize Natural Lighting

Sometimes, you don’t have to look too far for an easy solution; the answer could be right outside your window!

Wherever you can, try to get some natural lighting into your home office. If you have windows that face the sun, set up your desk close by. This way, you can get bright lighting for free when you work during the morning hours.

Use Energy Efficient Lighting

If you would like to get affordable lighting, hire an electrician to fit LED lights in your home.

LED lighting is not only a better option than fluorescent due to it being more environmentally friendly, but you also get to save up on your utility bill! On average, LED bulbs use up to 75% less energy as opposed to traditional lighting.

It is best to get professional assistance with light fixtures to ensure that no energy is wasted and everything is working smoothly. With TD West Electric, you can hire an electrician in Newark, CA, to help you with any electrical troubleshooting or light installments needed in your home.

The world is continuously progressing, and with it, so are our vehicles. While we’re far from the flying cars that every sci-fi movie in the early ’90s predicted, we are slowly moving away from traditional gas-operated vehicles. These days, electric vehicles are all the rage.

While electric cars may be more futuristic, many people wonder whether they’re simply a gimmick. Well, let’s take a look at all an electric car has to offer!

Environmentally-Friendly

Electric cars are ‘greener’ options. Studies have shown that using an electric vehicle can reduce your greenhouse emission significantly!

In the last year, nearly 70 million tons of pollution were emitted into the air in the US alone. A significant contributor to this air pollution is gas vehicles. On the contrary, electric cars have zero tailpipe emissions, leading to little to no air pollution. This feature ensures cleaner air and a reduced carbon footprint.

They’re Cost-Effective

Despite being new in the market, electric vehicles cost around the same as gas vehicles. And with increasing demand, many companies are planning on reducing prices further to facilitate consumers.

Although an electric car’s base price is more or less the same as a gas car’s, you still save up more with the former. An electric vehicle is a very low maintenance, which means fewer trips for spare parts or quick fixes to the mechanic.

Additionally, you save up by not having to purchase gas or opt for oil changes regularly. The only cost is the occasional visit to a professional electrician for maintenance.

They’re Convenient

Have you ever sat down in your car, ready to go to work, only to find that your gas tank is empty? Unfortunately, this is an all too familiar issue with traditional cars.

You can skip the gas station for good when you buy yourself an electric car. Unlike traditional cars, you can just charge your electric car within the comfort of your home. You could also charge it at work or on the road, wherever you see fit!

If you would like to install an electric vehicle charging system in your home, contact us, at TD West Electrical. We provide professional installation of EV charging systems by our in-house expert technicians. Or we can fix the one you already have installed at home!

Hire our reliable electricians in Newark, CA., and never worry about any issues with your electric car.

Whether you own a large business or a family home, the chances are that you’ve had to deal with flickering lights or power outages at least a few times. Electrical mishaps are inevitable, but they need to be dealt with to prevent serious consequences.

Although you might be tempted to ask the closest person with any electrical know-how to lend you a hand, hiring a professional electrician is more helpful in the long term. Here’s why you should always opt for a professional electrical company.

They’re Safer

The best thing about a professional is that they have years of experience. That means they know exactly what decision to take to ensure that everything is dealt with safely.

Professional electricians have the appropriate training to deal with just about any kind of electrical problem your home might face. Additionally, they own industry-grade equipment and safety wear to keep themselves and your family out of harm’s way.

They’re Certified

There’s something about a certified professional that puts even the biggest skeptic’s mind at ease. In California, electricians are required to obtain a license to offer their services.

Along with licenses, professional electrical companies also have workers’ insurance. Worker’s compensation helps you avoid lawsuits for accidental damages or injuries on your property.

They Are Warrantied

A lot of homeowners opt for professional electrical companies due to the assurance of a job well done. This promise is usually solidified with a surety bond provided by the company.

When you deal with a licensed electrician, you’re guaranteed a complete project. However, in the case you suspect that the work done by your contractor was not up to mark, you can complain and avail fair compensation or have someone come and fix it again free of charge.

Professional electric companies take a lot of pride in their customer service and ensure regular follow-ups.

They’re Knowledgeable

Professionals are not only good at installations and fixing your fuse box, but also have a whole lot of knowledge about maintenance.

When you have an experienced electrician working in your home, you can always ask for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the health of your appliances and system. Additionally, they can advise you regarding what electrical work you should do and what work requires an experienced hand.

Getting the right help for your home’s electric problems is vital to solving any serious issues. If you’re looking to hire an electrician in Newark, CA, reach out to us at TD West Electrical. We offer premium electrical services for all our clients.

Every modern business depends on power for smooth operations, and we doubt that your business is any different. Therefore, you must ensure the reliability of electricity supply systems to avoid downtime, which can hurt the company’s bottom lines. Here are five qualities you should look for in a commercial electrical contractor:

Experience And Knowledge

You must hire an experienced professional electrical contractor. As a business owner, you want to make sure you hire professionals who can troubleshoot problems in complicated commercial electrical systems accurately and quickly. Experienced contractors have the expertise and knowledge needed to undertake intricate commercial projects.

Licensing And Insurance

Commercial electrical systems are complex and expensive, and a lot of things can go wrong. Therefore, you should hire commercial electrical contractors who are licensed and insured. It will allow you to mitigate the potential risks and recover money in case something goes wrong or someone is harmed during the project.

Comprehensive Services

As a business person, you don’t want to waste your time or allocate resources to finding multiple electrical contractors. Hence, you must look for a contractor that offers a wide range of services, ranging from electrical panel upgrades to remodel work. Partner with a contractor that provides replacements, repairs, maintenance, and upgrades services as needed.

Detail-Oriented Approach

Installing or repairing a commercial electrical system requires a detail-oriented approach. Electricians must have a good understanding of every aspect of the system to ensure it works efficiently.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report, electrical failures or malfunctions were the second leading cause of U.S. home fires. These home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year. Check out the three common causes of electrical fires and how to prevent them:

Faulty Appliances And Electrical Outlets

Faulty and malfunctioning outlets are the prevalent cause of electric fires. Electrical outlets can sustain damage due to various reasons—commonly from wiring issues within the circuit. Plugging in too many appliances can also damage the outlet. Regardless, you must never use receptacles and switches that are not working properly.

Moreover, cords on electrical appliances—especially the ones that are moved frequently—suffer a lot of abuse and can wear out over time. Again, you must never plug-in appliances with a frayed cord. It can transfer the heat into a combustible surface near the outlet, which can lead to an electric fire.

Outdated Electrical System

U.S. households require a large volume of energy to power various home equipment, including water heaters, lights, and refrigerators. In modern households, energy consumption is even higher due to numerous devices, including air conditioners, computers, plasma TVs, microwaves, smart home devices, and more.

However, electrical systems of old properties can’t meet these energy requirements. Due to overload, the old breaker boxes can malfunction and—instead of shutting down—short out the circuitry to cause electrical fires. Hire a professional electrician for complete home rewiring.

Extension Cords

Extension cords may seem like a convenient and harmless tool to power your home appliances and devices, but they pose a higher risk of electrical fires. Extension cords can overheat and cause fires when overloaded. Moreover, if you trip from the extension cord wire, you can damage the cord to cause a short circuit.

It’s important to understand that extension cords are designed to power electrical equipment for a short duration of time. All your appliances should be plugged directly into the outlets. If you don’t have enough outlets to power your computer, hire a licensed electrician to install new ones to minimize the risk of fire or other electrical hazards in your home.
